How to Install Adobe Software to View PDFs on Your Windows or Mac Computer

Portable Document Format (PDF) files are essential for sharing documents while preserving their original formatting. To open, view, and print these files, you need a PDF reader. Adobe Acrobat Reader DC is the industry-standard, free software for this purpose, and it's available for both Windows and macOS.

This guide will walk you through the simple steps to download and install Adobe Acrobat Reader DC on your computer.

Method 1: For Windows PC

Step 1: Go to the Official Adobe Website Open your preferred web browser (like Chrome, Firefox, or Edge) and navigate to the official Adobe Acrobat Reader download page: https://get.adobe.com/reader/

Step 2: Download the Installer On the website, you will see a prominent download button. Click the "Download Acrobat Reader" button.

  • Optional: You may see a checkmark to also install McAfee security scan. It is recommended to uncheck this box if you do not want additional software installed on your computer.

Step 3: Run the Installer Once the download is complete, locate the file in your Downloads folder (it is usually named AcroRdrDCxxxx_xxxx_en_US.exe). Double-click the file to run the installer.

Step 4: Follow the Installation Wizard The installation wizard will open. It will guide you through the process.

  • You may see a User Account Control (UAC) prompt asking for permission to make changes to your device. Click "Yes".
  • The installer will then extract and install the necessary files. This may take a few minutes.

Step 5: Launch Adobe Acrobat Reader DC Once the installation is complete, the software will launch automatically. You can now open any PDF file by double-clicking it, and it will open in Adobe Acrobat Reader DC.

You can also find it in your Start Menu by searching for "Adobe Acrobat Reader DC".

Method 2: For Mac (macOS)

Step 1: Go to the Official Adobe Website Open Safari, Chrome, or another browser and go to the same official download page: https://get.adobe.com/reader/

Step 2: Download the Installer The website should automatically detect that you are using a Mac. Click the "Download Now" button.

  • Optional: As with the Windows version, you can uncheck any offers for additional software like McAfee.

Step 3: Open the Downloaded Disk Image (.dmg) File After the download is complete, go to your Downloads folder and find the file named AdbeRdrDCxxxx_xxxx_en_US.dmg. Double-click it to open it. This will mount a virtual disk image on your desktop.

Step 4: Drag the Application to Your Applications Folder A new window will open showing the Adobe Acrobat Reader DC application icon and an Applications folder shortcut. Simply click and drag the Adobe Acrobat Reader icon into the Applications folder.

Step 5: Eject the Disk Image and Launch Once the copying is complete, you can eject the disk image by right-clicking it on your desktop and selecting "Eject" or by dragging it to the Trash (which will turn into an Eject symbol). Now, go to your Applications folder and double-click Adobe Acrobat Reader DC to launch it. The first time you open it, macOS may ask for confirmation that you want to open it. Click "Open".

Alternative Method: Using the Mac App Store

For an even simpler installation on a Mac, you can use the App Store.

  1. Open the App Store from your Dock or Applications folder.
  2. In the search bar in the top-left corner, type "Adobe Acrobat Reader" and press Enter.
